LOWNDES COUNTY, AL – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham has issued a Tropical Storm Warning for Lowndes County, effective immediately. Residents in Fort Deposit and Hayneville are advised to shelter now as dangerous winds are expected. Last-minute preparations should be complete.
Wind gusts of 40-50 mph, with peaks up to 65 mph, are anticipated to continue until Saturday afternoon. The NWS indicates a potential for winds reaching 58 to 73 mph. Significant wind damage is possible.
A Flood Watch is also in effect. An additional 2-4 inches of rain, with localized higher amounts, could lead to major flooding. Evacuations and rescues are likely. Individuals in flood-prone areas should strongly consider protective actions. Heed all flood watches and warnings; failure to act could result in serious injury or loss of life. Rivers and small streams may overflow, and floodwaters could enter structures. Driving conditions will become dangerous, with potential road closures.
