Household Hazardous Waste Day is October 31, 2026

The Louisa County General Services Department holds at least two Household Hazardous Waste Day events every calendar year. One takes place in the Spring and one in the Fall. The events are designed to allow residents the chance to dispose of common hazardous household wastes free of charge. These wastes cannot be placed in the landfill and there is no local vendor they can be taken to for recycling. Household Hazardous Waste Day events are one way the County of Louisa aims to protect the environment for the future. Other ways are the recycling programs the County offers at its refuse sites including comingle, cardboard, and used oil recycling. Verizon Copper Discontinuation Process • Louisa County, VA Search Home News Flash Verizon Copper Discontinuation Process News Flash Verizon Copper Discontinuation Process News Updates & The Informed Citizen, Louisa County Newsletter Posted on September 09, 2026 Verizon has filed an application with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to discontinue plain old telephone service (“POTS”) over legacy copper facilities as part of their network modernization project in Virginia. Key Information Provided by Verizon: The Initial Letter Was Only Informational: You may have recently received a letter from Verizon about this transition. The letter recently sent to all copper served customers was an informational advance notice required by the FCC. It does not mean Verizon is immediately disconnecting their service. Verizon will contact customers again directly when and if it is time to transition off copper, but this will only happen if the customer has an adequate alternative as discussed below. Copper Will Remain if the Customer Does Not Have an Adequate Alternative: Verizon is seeking FCC authority to discontinue copper services only at locations where customers can obtain specific replacement voice services listed in Verizon’s FCC application. The customer must have at least one of the following alternatives available for Verizon to discontinue service over copper. If the customer does not have one of the following services available, then Verizon is not discontinuing copper voice service at their location.Verizon Wireless Coverage: A reliable cell signal from Verizon that is sufficient to support voice service using a standard mobile phone or a Verizon wireless home phone replacement box. Verizon Fiber: High-speed fiber service directly from Verizon. Fiber, Cable or Wireless service from Certain Specific Providers: Mobile cell service, fiber, or cable service from one of 10 specific companies (AT&T, T-Mobile, Comcast/Xfinity, Charter/Spectrum, Cox, Breezeline, Optimum, Shentel, Sparklight, or Armstrong). Continued Voice & 911 Functionality: Residents will continue to have access to reliable voice service, including for emergency communications, during and following the completion of this effort. Critical emergency functionalities, including 911 and Enhanced 911 (E911) services, will continue to perform seamlessly over modern networks. Replacement Options & Features: Options include service over fiber optic lines where available. In other areas, Verizon offers a replacement service that operates over a wireless network while preserving a familiar landline experience using existing home-telephone sets. This option requires zero installation or equipment fees, features monthly plans from $20 to $30, plus taxes, surcharges, and fees, and allows customers to keep their existing phone numbers. Customers are of course free to choose other providers and can port their telephone numbers. Power Outage Protection: Equipment provided to transitioning voice customers includes a standardized backup battery solution using commercially available batteries to maintain call capability during commercial power outages. Modernization Information from Verizon: Decades-old copper infrastructure is vulnerable to storm damage, flooding, corrosion, and theft. The legacy copper network operates at only a fraction of its peak capacity. Only 5% of households in Virginia still have a copper landline, while the rest have already moved on to more modern technologies. Maintaining an aging copper network for a small and shrinking number of users diverts crucial resources away from future investment in expanding fiber and wireless services. Transitioning to modern technologies will allow Verizon to improve reliability, reduce network duplication, lower environmental impacts, and build robust, modern networks. Virginia already envisioned this transition years ago, as state law allows Verizon to serve using any and all available wireline and terrestrial wireless technologies and eliminates service obligations where other wireline or terrestrial wireless providers are available. Following regulatory approval from the FCC, affected customers will receive direct notifications outlining their timeline, available options, and dedicated support resources.

Small businesses: Where to go for financial relief information April 2, 2020 by Lesley Fair Attorney, FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection If you own a small business or work for one, you’ve seen the headlines about financial relief that may be available to some companies through the Small Business Administration (SBA). But you’ve also heard about scammers who extract a grain of truth from the news and distort it in an effort to cheat small businesses. Now more than ever it’s critical for small businesses to go straight to the source for accurate information about what’s happening at the SBA. And that source, of course, is the Small Business Administration’s dedicated page, sba.gov/coronavirus. The SBA’s Coronavirus Small Business Guidance & Loan Resources page offers the latest information about the Paycheck Protection Program, Economic Injury Disaster Loans and Loan Advances, SBA Debt Relief, and SBA Express Bridge Loans. Yes, there are legitimate business groups and financial institutions sharing information, too. But given the number of fraudsters out to make a quick buck with bogus websites and phony email, your safest bet it to go straight to the SBA by carefully typing the URL sba.gov/coronavirus into the address bar at the top of your browser. Here are more tips to help you avoid scams targeting small businesses. Scammers often mimic the look and feel of legitimate email. You’ve heard warnings for years about email phishing attempts. Fraudsters have upped their game in response. They’ve been known to copy logos of financial institutions and government agencies, including the SBA, and use wording that sounds familiar. They also manipulate email addresses so that a message looks to be from a legitimate source – but isn’t. That’s why it’s dangerous to respond to those emails. Instead go directly to the SBA site. Don’t click on links. Say you get an email that says it’s from your bank or a government agency. Don’t click on any links. It could load malware onto your computer. If you think you may need to respond, pick up the phone and call the office directly, but don’t use a number listed in the email. That could be fake, too. Instead, search online for a genuine telephone number or call your banker using the number you’ve always used. Yes, now is a good time to keep in close contact with your financial institution, but employ the same established lines of communication you used before COVID-19 became a concern. Be suspicious of unsolicited phone calls. Some scammers may try the personal approach by calling you and impersonating someone from a financial institution or government agency. Don’t engage in conversation. If you think you may need to respond, call using a number you know is legit. Watch out for application scams. Some small businesses report they’ve received unsolicited calls or email from people claiming to have an inside track to expedite financial relief. The people contacting them may charge upfront fees or ask for sensitive financial information – account numbers, tax IDs, Social Security numbers, and the like. Don’t take the bait. It’s a scam. Applying for a loan was a step-by-step process before the Coronavirus crisis and it’s a step-by-step process now. That’s why the SBA’s sba.gov/coronavirus site is the safest place for you to start. Alert others to Coronavirus relief check scams. Most people have read the news about Coronavirus relief checks that many Americans may receive. The FTC Consumer Blog has advice about spotting relief check scams. Share the tips with your co-workers, family, and social networks. If you spot a potential Coronavirus-related scam, report it to the FTC at ftc.gov/complaint.
