Sergeant Getman Named 2025 Deputy of the Year | Longboat Key
The Manatee County Sheriff's Office named Sergeant Brett Getman its 2025 Deputy of the Year following an ocean rescue on Longboat Key on August 9.
Getman and Deputy Vincent Bowman were on beach patrol when bystanders flagged them down. Two men were being swept away by a strong current more than 100 yards from shore. Getman radioed dispatch to alert the Marine Unit, Coast Guard, and Beach Patrol, then removed his gear and entered the water. Bowman remained on shore as a spotter.
Getman reached one of the men and instructed him to hold onto a float while keeping him alert during the swim back to shore. When they landed, Beach Patrol had arrived. Getman directed them to take their board and assist the second man still struggling in the water. Beach Patrol rescued him and the Marine Unit transported him to a nearby marina, where EMS met them. Both men went to a hospital for treatment.
Sheriff Rick Wells and Bealls Division Vice President of Loss Prevention Stephen Hall presented the award to Getman for his quick thinking and willingness to risk his life.
