UK Student Ben Ison Wins Sullivan Award for Humanitarian Work
Ben Ison, a University of Kentucky social work student from Mount Sterling, received the 2026 Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, the university's highest honor for humanitarian service.
UK presents the award annually to two graduating seniors and one community member. The Sullivan Foundation created the award to recognize individuals who demonstrate "a spirit of love for and helpfulness to other men and women."
Ison earned dual bachelor's degrees in social work and criminal justice in May, along with a minor in criminology. He maintained a 4.0 grade point average.
As a research assistant in the College of Social Work, Ison examined juvenile justice issues and systems affecting youth and communities. He reviewed literature, supported data collection and analysis, and served on the University Appeals Board, which reviews academic and disciplinary cases.
He completed an internship with the Exit Crisis Unit at Maxwell Street Presbyterian Church, providing crisis intervention and connecting individuals to resources. He organized a clothing drive paired with Narcan training to support harm reduction efforts.
On campus, Ison worked as a student ambassador for the College of Social Work and held leadership positions in Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, including internal vice president and mental health chairman. He implemented suicide prevention programming and earned certifications in QPR suicide prevention and responsible conduct of research.
"Through his academic excellence, leadership and compassion for others, Ison exemplifies the spirit of a servant leader," said Shelita Jackson, director of undergraduate studies in the College of Social Work.
Ison plans to work at the intersection of social work and criminal justice, focusing on equitable systems and supporting vulnerable populations.
Morgan David and Sam Powdrill also received Sullivan Awards this year.
