A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for the Big Belt, Bridger, and Castle Mountains, as well as the Gallatin and Madison County Mountains and Centennial Mountains. This watch is in effect from Saturday evening, October 10th, through late Sunday night, October 11th. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Great Falls, MT, issued this alert today, October 8th, at 2:39 PM MDT.

Heavy snow is possible, with total accumulations estimated between 6 and 12 inches. Specifically, the Big Belt Mountains could see 6 to 12 inches of snow, and elevations above 7000 feet in the mountains of Madison and Gallatin counties are also forecast to receive 6 to 12 inches. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph.

Travel is expected to be very difficult, especially over mountain passes. Backcountry conditions may become extremely dangerous. Residents should be aware that wet snow and strong winds could lead to downed tree limbs and power lines. The NWS advises monitoring the latest forecasts for updates on this developing situation.
