Strong Storm Near Sawmills: Seek Shelter, High Winds Expected

A Special Weather Statement is in effect until 5:45 PM EDT for Greater Caldwell and Burke, warning of a strong thunderstorm near Sawmills with 40 mph winds and pea-sized hail; residents should seek shelter and move indoors.

A Special Weather Statement has been issued for Greater Caldwell and Greater Burke counties, effective immediately until 5:45 PM EDT today, September 20.

The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg SC reports that at 5:13 PM EDT, a strong thunderstorm was detected by Doppler radar. The storm is located approximately 6 miles south of Lenoir, near Sawmills, and is moving south at 10 mph.

Residents in the affected areas, including Lenoir, Sawmills, Granite Falls, Valdese, Hudson, Icard, Cajah's Mountain, Drexel, Connelly Springs, and Rutherford College, should be prepared for wind gusts up to 40 mph and pea-sized hail.

The National Weather Service advises that these conditions could lead to downed tree limbs and unsecured objects being blown around. Minor damage to outdoor objects from hail is also possible.

If you are outdoors, seek shelter inside a building. Individuals on or near Lake Rhodhiss should exit the water and move indoors or into a vehicle. Remember that lightning can strike up to 10 miles from a thunderstorm; if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck. Move to a safe shelter now and avoid being on the water during the storm.
