A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Lee County, including Leesburg, effective today, October 9, 2026, from 8:28 AM EDT to 4:30 PM EDT. Residents should complete preparations immediately for hazardous wind, potential moderate flooding, and the possibility of several tornadoes.
The National Weather Service in Tallahassee, FL, warns of peak winds between 15-25 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph, posing a risk of limited damage to property such as porches, awnings, and unanchored mobile homes. Scattered power and communication outages are possible. Efforts to protect property should be underway now.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 3-6 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts. This could lead to moderate rainfall flooding, potentially prompting evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may become swollen, and flood waters could enter structures. Heed any flood watches and warnings.
The situation is favorable for tornadoes, with a potential for several, some possibly intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if issued.
