Dangerous Rip Currents & Large Waves Expected for Coastal Areas
A Rip Current Statement and High Surf Risk are in effect for coastal Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, and Lee Counties from Friday morning through Saturday evening, warning of dangerous rip currents and large breaking waves.
Coastal residents and visitors in Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, and Lee Counties should exercise extreme caution due to a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tampa Bay Ruskin FL. Dangerous rip currents and large breaking waves are expected.
The Rip Current Risk is in effect from Friday morning, October 9, through Saturday evening, October 10. A High Surf Risk is also in effect from 11 AM EDT Friday, October 9, until 8 AM EDT Saturday, October 10. Rip currents can carry even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water, and high surf can lead to localized beach erosion and hazardous swimming conditions.
The NWS advises to swim near a lifeguard if entering the water. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If able, swim parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
