(Florida, Citrus County) – In accordance with Citrus County Code of Ordinances, Chapter 46, a burn ban went into effect on April 1, 2026, for all unincorporated areas of Citrus County following the Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) reaching a level of 502 on March 31, 2026. Despite the possibility of rainfall in the coming days, conditions across the county remain critically dry. Vegetation is highly susceptible to ignition, and Citrus County is currently experiencing severe to extreme drought conditions. As a result, the risk of wildfire remains elevated. Citrus County Fire Rescue will continue to closely monitor environmental conditions. The burn ban may automatically be lifted once the KBDI remains below 500 for seven consecutive days. However, if conditions do not sufficiently improve, a request may be made to the Board of County Commissioners to extend the ban in the interest of public safety. Updates will be provided as conditions change. Residents living within the City of Inverness or the City of Crystal River should contact their respective city offices for municipal burning regulations. For questions about outdoor burning, contact Citrus County Fire Rescue Headquarters at 352-527-5406 or the Florida Forest Service – Withlacoochee Forestry Center at 352-797-4100.
