Rip Current Statement Issued for Local Beaches Until 7 PM Today
A Rip Current Statement has been issued for Matagorda Islands, Brazoria Islands, Galveston Island, and Bolivar Peninsula until 7:00 PM CDT today, October 12th, warning of dangerous rip currents.
Beachgoers are advised to exercise extreme caution due to a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service Houston/Galveston TX. Dangerous rip currents are expected along Gulf-facing beaches, including the Matagorda Peninsula, Brazoria County beaches, Galveston Island, and the Bolivar Peninsula, effective immediately until 7:00 PM CDT today, October 12th.
Rip currents pose a significant threat, capable of sweeping even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper waters. The National Weather Service emphasizes that these conditions can be life-threatening.
To ensure safety, the public is urged to swim only near a lifeguard and to avoid areas near rocks, jetties, and piers. If caught in a rip current, the National Weather Service advises individuals to remain calm, relax, and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. If possible, swim in a direction parallel to the shoreline to escape the current. If unable to escape, face the shore and signal for help by calling or waving.
