Beachgoers are advised to exercise extreme caution today, October 10th, due to a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Houston/Galveston TX. Dangerous rip currents are expected along Gulf-facing beaches through this evening, impacting the Matagorda Peninsula, Brazoria County beaches, Galveston Island, and the Bolivar Peninsula.

Rip currents pose a significant risk, capable of sweeping even experienced swimmers away from shore into deeper waters. This Moderate severity alert is in effect until 8:00 PM CDT today, October 10th.

The NWS strongly recommends swimming near a lifeguard and avoiding areas near rocks, jetties, and piers. If caught in a rip current, the guidance is to relax and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. If possible, swim in a direction parallel to the shoreline to escape the current. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
