Rip Current Statement Issued for Galveston Island, Bolivar Peninsula
A Rip Current Statement is in effect for Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula until 1 AM CDT Saturday, October 10, posing a high risk of dangerous rip currents; a Coastal Flood Advisory is also active until 7 PM CDT tonight.
Residents and visitors to Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula are advised of a Rip Current Statement in effect until 1 AM CDT Saturday, October 10. The National Weather Service (NWS) Houston/Galveston TX has issued this warning, indicating a high risk of dangerous rip currents along Gulf-facing beaches.
A Coastal Flood Advisory is also in effect until 7 PM CDT this evening, October 9, for the same areas, including the Matagorda Peninsula and Brazoria County beaches. Minor coastal flooding is expected, potentially leading to the flooding of lots, parks, and roads, with only isolated road closures anticipated. If travel is required, allow extra time and do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Property owners in flood-prone areas should take necessary protective actions.
Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. The NWS advises to swim near a lifeguard and away from rocks, jetties, and piers. If caught in a rip current, relax and float, and do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If escape is not possible, face the shore and call or wave for help.
