Coastal residents and visitors are advised to exercise extreme caution due to a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Houston/Galveston TX. Dangerous rip currents are expected along Gulf-facing beaches, including the Matagorda Peninsula, Brazoria County beaches, Galveston Island, and the Bolivar Peninsula.

This statement is effective immediately, beginning October 8 at 9:14 PM CDT, and remains in effect through late Friday night, October 10 at 1:00 AM CDT. The NWS warns that the risk of strong rip currents may persist through Saturday afternoon, and the hazard statement could be extended.

Rip currents can be powerful and can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper waters. To ensure your safety, the NWS advises swimming near a lifeguard and avoiding areas near rocks, jetties, and piers.

If you find yourself caught in a rip current, remember to stay calm. The NWS recommends relaxing and floating rather than attempting to swim against the current. If possible, swim in a direction parallel to the shoreline to escape the current. If you are unable to escape, face the shore and wave or call for help.
