Rip Current Statement Issued for Local Beaches Through This Evening

A Rip Current Statement is in effect for Matagorda Islands, Brazoria Islands, Galveston Island, and Bolivar Peninsula today, October 12, until 7:00 PM CDT, due to dangerous rip currents.

A Rip Current Statement has been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Houston/Galveston TX, effective today, October 12, from 5:06 AM CDT until 7:00 PM CDT.

Dangerous rip currents are expected along Gulf-facing beaches, including the Matagorda Peninsula, Brazoria County beaches, Galveston Island, and the Bolivar Peninsula. This statement is in effect through this evening.

The NWS advises that rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water.

For your safety, if you are at the beach, swim near a lifeguard and away from rocks, jetties, and piers. If you are caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If you are able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If you are unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
