Susan Blizzard, Greene County Educator and Relay for Life Leader, Dies at 68

Mrs. Susan Moore Blizzard, age 68, passed away Thursday, June 4, 2026, surrounded by the family that she loved with all her heart and without condition.Born in Germany on November 2, 1957, while her father was in military service, Susan was the daughter of Eddie Ray and Margaret O’Neal Moore. Her family later made their home in the Hookerton Community of Greene County. Following her graduation from high school, she continued her post-secondary education at Atlantic Christian College, where she graduated with a degree in education with a concentration in science.Susan began her career as an educator teaching in Craven County for several years before accepting a position as a science teacher at Greene Central High School. During her tenure, Susan was diagnosed with breast cancer. She bravely continued to teach throughout her treatments, ultimately overcoming the disease with a resilience and determination that would come to define her entire life.As a cancer survivor, Susan organized and chaired the inaugural Relay for Life in Greene County. She served as its chairperson for many years, ultimately leading the Greene County Relay for Life to be recognized as “Tops in the Nation” for money raised per capita. Her service to her community extended to many years as a volunteer EMT with Hookerton Fire and Rescue, answering numerous emergency calls day and night. Following the disastrous flooding of Hurricane Floyd in 1999, Greene County Interfaith was formed to serve local citizens. Susan served on the Interfaith board for many years, eventually serving as President and helping guide the organization through major growth and the acquisition of a new facility. The revelation of severe financial issues in Greene County in 2012 led Susan to attend numerous commissioner meetings, where she fiercely advocated for better pay for county employees at a time when benefit cuts and furlough days were becoming commonplace. Her advocacy and energy culminated in her election to the Greene County Board of Commissioners. She served two terms, running unopposed in both elections and garnering the largest number of votes of any candidate on the ballot.During her tenure as a county commissioner, Susan was a constant and undeterred voice for better employee pay and improved county facilities. She lobbied without reservation for the construction of the Greene County Wellness Center, devoting numerous hours behind the scenes to ensure its funding and completion. The trademark of her public service was her willingness to ask unpopular questions; she remained undeterred in seeking transparency and integrity in all county matters. As a profound testimony to her desire to serve her fellowman without compromise, Susan gave eight years of leadership to the county and never once accepted the monthly monetary stipend paid to commissioners.Above all, Susan’s greatest service was to the family that she adored and supported. From her husband of nearly 50 years to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild, Susan’s love and support was always present and evident. She loved her siblings, extended family, and close friends with the same devotion. She was always the first to offer help, but the last to ask for it.After suffering a stroke in early 2026, health complications compounded. As Susan’s husband beautifully stated, “Her heart just isn’t strong enough anymore because she has given so much of it to everyone else.”Left to cherish her memory and the wonderful example of selfless service she has set, are her husband, Steve Blizzard; son, Jay Blizzard (Ashley); daughter, Sarah Blizzard (Joseph Wade); grandchildren, Christopher Blizzard (Kayla), Nathan Blizzard (fiancé, Chloe), Gracie O’Briant, Bailey O’Briant, Kinley Wade, Sadie Wade, and a soon to be born grandson; great-grandchild, Wesley Blizzard; brother, Jeffrey Neal Moore; sisters-in-law, Betty Lou Blizzard and Linda Blizzard; brother-in-law, Tommy Blizzard (Jennifer); and several nieces and nephews of the Moore and Blizzard families. In addition to her parents, Susan was preceded in death by her siblings, Donna Marie Moore and Michael Ray Moore; and brother-in-law, Carl Richard Blizzard.Funeral Services will be held graveside 2 PM Saturday, June 6th, at the Snow Hill Cemetery with her longtime friend and fellow EMT whom she ran many calls with, Larry Head officiating. The family will receive friends casually following the service and from 4 – 8 PM on Friday, June 5th, at the home of her son, Jay Blizzard. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Susan’s memory are suggested to Service League of Greenville Hospice House that rendered such wonderful care to Susan and support to her family. Those memorials may be directed to The Service League of Greenville Hospice House, 920 Wellness Drive, Greenville, NC 27834.Condolences may be shared at www.taylor-tyson.com
