Residents in east-central Luna County and west-central Dona Ana County, New Mexico, are advised to take immediate shelter due to a Severe Thunderstorm Warning issued by the National Weather Service in El Paso. The warning is in effect from 11:05 AM MDT until 11:30 AM MDT today, September 29.
At 11:05 AM MDT, a severe thunderstorm was located 12 miles north of Akela, moving northeast at 20 mph. Radar indicated the storm carries a significant hazard of 60 mph wind gusts. This can cause damage to roofs, siding, and trees. Affected locations include Uvas Valley and Magdalena Peak.
The National Weather Service urges all individuals in the affected area to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building for protection. Remain alert for a possible tornado, which can develop quickly from severe thunderstorms. If a tornado is spotted, immediately go to the basement or a small central room within a sturdy structure.
Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm, posing a risk of flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.
