Lakeland lost a devoted public servant and cherished resident with the death of Robert Gene Harris, who passed away peacefully Oct. 1, 2026, at age 95.

Born Dec. 30, 1930, in East St. Louis, Illinois, to Louis R. and Elizabeth C. (Brown) Harris, Robert Harris dedicated his life to faith and service.

He served for many years as a pastor in the Church of the Nazarene, offering compassion and sharing his faith with congregations in Lakeland and surrounding Polk County neighborhoods. Harris also served his country in the United States Army.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Dolores (Brown) Harris; daughter, Betty Lou (Harris) Hopkins; and brother, Harold Lloyd Harris.

Harris leaves behind his son, James Harris, and his wife, Norma; several grandchildren; and a wide circle of extended family, friends, and loved ones.

A private service will be held for family and close friends.
