Legislative Affairs - Monroe County, FL
Legislative Affairs oversees and manages the legislative and intergovernmental initiatives and functions for the county at the state and federal levels. The department's responsibilities include developing the county's state and federal legislative agendas, coordinating the county's position and response to pending state and federal legislation, preparing resolutions, talking points, issuing briefs and legislative updates, and identifying and responding to federal, state, and local funding opportunities. Legislative Priorities Each year, Legislative Affairs develops the state and federal legislative agendas, which are used as advocacy tools to work with federal and state lawmakers and agencies. The agenda includes the county's legislative priorities and the county's positions on anticipated issues relevant to the county that are expected to arise in the current U.S. Congress or the current state legislature. The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners approves these agendas. The county's legislative staff and federal and state lobbyists pursue the legislative issues listed in the approved agendas, placing special attention on the priority issues. The office also prepares a variety of legislative advocacy materials, which include issue briefs, one-pagers, letters, and resolutions. Monroe County state and federal priorities generally center on environmental issues such as Everglades restoration and coral reef protection, water quality protection, resilience, wind and flood insurance, and appropriations, among other issues. Duck Key Security District Advisory Board Seeking Appointments
The Duck Key Security District Advisory Board was spearheaded by the Duck Key Property Owners Association, approved by the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners to create a Special Taxing District, established for the “purpose of providing security services” for the residential areas of Duck Key.The advisory board is comprised of seven members all of which shall be District 4 appointments. Members are appointed to serve a term of three years. Vacancies are filled for the unexpired portion of a term.

Monroe County Construction Board Accepting Architect & Engineer Applications
The Construction Board of Adjustment and Appeals was created in 1996. This board is governed by the same ordinances as those pertaining to the Contractors Examining Board. The purpose of this board is to serve as an appeal board and hear discrepancies in the interpretation of current codes.The board consists of all the members of the Contractors Examining Board, plus one registered architect and one registered professional engineer, making it a ten-member board. All are appointed by the Monroe County Board of County Commissioners. Each member is selected for a three-year term. It adds to the process for local governments to pass ordinances and grants certain additional rights to those challenging them. The bill requires counties and cities to produce a “business impact estimate” before passing an ordinance, with exceptions. "The Florida Constitution states the governing body of each county shall be a Board of County Commissioners composed of five members serving staggered terms of four years, except when otherwise provided by the county charter. After each 10-year census, the Board of County Commissioners shall divide the county into districts of contiguous territory as nearly equal in population as practicable. Summer Camps Start June 1
"Monroe County Parks & Beaches is gearing up for another summer of fun, learning, and adventurous activities with its 2026 Summer Camp Program, offering eight weeks of activities for children aged 6 to 12 at multiple locations throughout the Florida Keys. Camp hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (excluding the volleyball specialty camp, which runs 9-3 p.m.), with a variety of activities, including interactive games, field trips, and hands-on experiences designed to keep kids active and engaged all summer long. The cost is $150 per week, with a $25 sibling discount available. Full registration is required at least 10 days prior to each camp session. Weekly sessions begin June 1, with Lower Keys camps taking place at Big Pine Key Community Park (3 Weeks: June 1-19), Sugarloaf School (June 22-26 Volleyball Camp $200 and July 13-17), and Bernstein Park (July 20-24 and Aug. 3-7). In the Upper Keys, camp is offered July 6–10 at Plantation Key Community Center in Tavernier. "Our summer camp program is about giving kids a safe, active, and memorable experience while school is out," said Monroe County Parks and Beaches Director John Allen. "From outdoor play to structured activities and local field trips, we're proud to offer something for every child across the Keys."
