A Special Weather Statement has been issued for western Minnesota due to gusty winds and low humidity, creating near-critical fire weather conditions and a risk of rapid fire spread today.

Residents in Stevens, Pope, Lac Qui Parle, Swift, Chippewa, Kandiyohi, Yellow Medicine, Renville, Redwood, Brown, Watonwan, and Martin counties should be aware of near-critical fire weather conditions today, Friday, October 10. The National Weather Service (NWS) Twin Cities/Chanhassen MN has issued a Special Weather Statement, effective from 2:49 AM CDT until 7:00 PM CDT.

Near record high temperatures combined with relative humidity values dropping to between 25 and 35 percent are expected. Wind gusts of 30 to 40 mph will further exacerbate these conditions, creating an environment where fires, especially in agricultural areas with dry crops, could spread rapidly.

The NWS advises checking burning restrictions and fire danger ratings before any outdoor burning activities. For more information on Minnesota's burning restrictions, visit www.dnr.state.mn.us/forestry/fire/firerating_restrictions.html.
