Residents in Hendry and Inland Collier County, including Hendry Correctional, Miles City, and Sunniland, should seek immediate shelter due to a strong thunderstorm. The National Weather Service in Miami, FL, issued a Special Weather Statement today, October 11, at 2:23 PM EDT, effective until 3:15 PM EDT.

NWS meteorologists are tracking a strong thunderstorm 12 miles south of Ave Maria, moving northeast at 5 mph. The primary hazard is wind gusts of 45 to 50 mph, which could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. This information is radar-indicated.

In addition to strong winds, torrential rainfall is occurring and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is also a significant concern; lightning can strike up to 10 miles away. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle immediately. These winds can down small tree limbs and branches, and blow around unsecured small objects. Seek shelter in a safe building until the storm passes.
