Engraving depicting the shooting of Union supporter Charles S. Douglas by Confederate soldiers at his home on Gay Street in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA at the outbreak of the U.S. Civil War (1861–1865). Douglas had displayed an American flag, and had defended the flag from pro-secessionists. The engraving was published in William "Parson" Brownlow's book, Sketches of the Rise, Progress, and Decline of Secession.

Gay Street in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA, looking north from Union Avenue. The Sanford, Chamberlain and Albers Building (430 S. Gay) on the far right is now an Arby's; the two buildings immedately to its left-- the light-colored two-bay structure and the darker 8-bay structure (the Woodruff's Building) are still standing.
