Monroe County Virtual Meeting on Tavernier Breakwater Repair
Monroe County will hold a virtual meeting Thursday, May 28, at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the Tavernier Breakwater Repair Project, which will begin construction soon.
Workers will install 2.5- to 4-foot boulders across 1,500 feet of jetty damaged by Hurricane Irma. The breakwater protects a low-lying subdivision prone to flooding from storms, tides, and sea-level rise. Without the barrier, vegetative debris flows into residential canals and degrades water quality.
Representatives from contractor LPS Contracting and engineering firm WSP USA Inc. will present a construction schedule and answer questions. The project includes repairing the existing breakwater and installing a weed gate.
Monroe County will also discuss job opportunities related to this project and other restoration work in the area.
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development funds the project through a Community Development Block Grant for Mitigation, administered by FloridaCommerce under grant IR045.
Residents and job seekers can join at https://mcbocc.zoom.us/j/2905510199 or dial 646-518-9805, meeting ID 290 551 0199.
For information, contact Rhonda Haag at [email protected] or 305-453-8774.
Residents can file complaints or appeals about the project with Monroe County, FloridaCommerce, or HUD. Written complaints must include the complainant's name, contact information, and a description of the concern, with reference to the CDBG-MIT breakwater project. Monroe County provides reasonable accommodations and language assistance upon request.
