Key Largo Water Problems: Home Plumbing Issues
Key Largo residents noticing odd tastes or smells in their tap water often have a household plumbing problem, not a water supply issue.
Reddish-brown or yellow water signals iron, either naturally present in drinking water or leaching from galvanized pipes. Black water indicates iron mixed with manganese. Neither poses health risks, though both can stain fixtures and laundry.
A rotten egg or sewage smell usually originates in household drains. Bacteria feeding on food, soap, and hair produce gases that remain in the drain until water flushes them into the air. Residents can test this by filling a glass at the sink, walking away, and smelling it. If the odor disappears, the drain is the culprit. Bleach disinfection resolves the problem.
If only hot water smells sulfurous, bacteria are growing in the water heater—common when units sit unused or temperature settings drop too low. A licensed plumber or the owner's manual can help eliminate the bacteria.
For odors that persist in cold water away from the sink, contact the Water Quality Division at 305-295-2146.
