Western Europe Records New Temperature Highs Amid Heatwaves

Temperatures across Western Europe have established new record highs as heatwaves continue to affect the region. The extreme conditions prompted various responses from governments and public services.

Spain and France experienced particularly intense heat. In Spain, thermometers recorded temperatures exceeding 43 degrees Celsius (109.4 degrees Fahrenheit) in multiple areas. French authorities reported similar conditions, with temperatures surpassing 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) in southwestern regions.

The United Kingdom also observed its highest recorded temperature, reaching 40.3 degrees Celsius (104.5 degrees Fahrenheit) in Coningsby, England. The previous record for the UK stood at 38.7 degrees Celsius (101.7 degrees Fahrenheit), set in 2019. The Met Office, the UK's national weather service, confirmed the new record.

Transportation services faced disruptions due to the heat. In the UK, Network Rail issued speed restrictions on train lines to prevent tracks from buckling. London's Luton Airport temporarily suspended flights after the heat caused a section of the runway to lift. Authorities redirected some flights to alternative airports.

Wildfires also emerged across the affected areas. Firefighters in southwestern France battled multiple blazes, leading to evacuations of residents from villages and campgrounds. Spanish emergency services responded to numerous wildfires across the country.

Public health advisories were issued in several nations. Health officials recommended people stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, and check on vulnerable individuals. Hospitals reported an increase in heat-related emergency calls.
