Teen Vaping Surpasses Smoking in Millard County

Staff Writer

Vaping Now Leads Teen Nicotine Use in Millard County

Vaping has become the dominant nicotine product among Millard County teenagers, while traditional cigarette smoking continues to decline, according to data from the National Youth Tobacco Survey conducted by the CDC and FDA.

E-cigarettes surpassed cigarettes as the most commonly used tobacco product among U.S. youth in 2014 and have held that position since. Flavored e-cigarettes—fruit, mint, menthol, and sweet varieties—drive much of their appeal. The Surgeon General has identified youth vaping as a public health concern, citing nicotine's effects on adolescent brain development.

Many teens perceive e-cigarettes as less harmful than cigarettes, complicating prevention efforts in schools and homes. Youth who vape face a higher likelihood of later smoking traditional cigarettes.

Marijuana use among Millard County teens remains a concern. Early exposure to nicotine, cannabis, and other substances increases the risk of long-term addiction and health consequences.

High school cigarette smoking has reached historically low rates. Some teens use both e-cigarettes and cigarettes simultaneously, known as dual use. Adolescents who begin smoking face higher risks of lifelong nicotine addiction, heart disease, lung disease, and premature death.
