KEMPER COUNTY – A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Kemper County by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, MS, as of October 9 at 10:02 AM CDT. Residents should prepare for potential hazardous winds and moderate flooding rain. This watch is effective immediately and expires at 6:15 PM UTC today.

WIND THREAT: Winds of 15-25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph are forecast. However, there is a potential for winds to reach 39 to 57 mph. Residents should plan for hazardous wind conditions, with efforts to protect property already underway. Limited wind damage is possible, including damage to porches, awnings, and unanchored mobile homes. Some large tree limbs may break, and a few trees could be snapped or uprooted. Scattered power and communications outages are also possible. Complete all preparations before winds become hazardous.

FLOODING RAIN THREAT: A Flood Watch is in effect, with 1-3 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. There is a potential for moderate flooding rain. Emergency plans should include the possibility of moderate flooding, which could lead to evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may swell, and small streams could overflow. Floodwaters may enter some structures. Heed all flood watches and warnings.

TORNADO THREAT: The NWS indicates that the situation is unfavorable for tornadoes, and none are expected at this time. However, showers and thunderstorms with gusty winds may still occur. Little to no preparations are needed for tornadoes, but residents should remain informed of the latest forecasts.
