Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Kemper County; Prepare for Wind & Flooding
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Kemper County, urging residents to prepare for hazardous winds up to 57 mph and moderate flooding with 1-3 inches of rain, according to the NWS Jackson MS.
KEMPER COUNTY, MS – A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Kemper County, effective from October 9 at 4:09 AM CDT until 12:15 PM CDT today, October 9. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, MS, advises residents to immediately prepare for hazardous wind and moderate flooding.
Strong winds are anticipated, with peak forecasts of 15-25 mph and gusts up to 35 mph. There is potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Residents should secure outdoor property now to prevent damage to porches, awnings, carports, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes. Expect broken tree limbs and potential for some trees to snap or uproot, leading to scattered power and communication outages. Hazardous driving conditions are possible, especially on elevated roadways.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with 1-3 inches of rain expected and locally higher amounts possible. This could lead to moderate flooding, potentially causing evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may swell, and small streams and ditches could overflow. Flooding may impact structures and lead to road closures in low-lying areas. Heed all flood watches and warnings, as failure to act could result in serious injury or loss of life.
The NWS indicates that tornadoes are not expected at this time, though gusty winds and thunderstorms may still occur.
Complete preparations now before the wind becomes hazardous. Monitor official NWS updates for the latest information.
