Kemper County residents are advised to prepare for tropical storm-force winds and significant flooding as the National Weather Service (NWS) Jackson MS has issued a Tropical Storm Watch, effective immediately until October 9 at 12:15 AM UTC.

A Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm-force winds, between 39 to 57 mph, are possible within the next 48 hours. Peak wind forecasts for Kemper County are 15-25 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. Residents should take action now to secure outdoor items, including porches, awnings, carports, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes. Expect potential damage to large tree limbs, fences, and roadway signs, and be aware that some roads may become impassable due to debris. Scattered power and communications outages are possible.

A Flood Watch is also in effect for Kemper County, with 2-4 inches of rain, and locally higher amounts, expected. This could lead to moderate flooding, prompting evacuations and rescues. Rivers and small streams may overflow, and floodwaters could enter some structures. Hazardous driving conditions are anticipated, particularly in low-lying areas and underpasses. Heed all flood watches and warnings and consider protective actions if you are in a flood-prone area. Failure to take action may result in serious injury or loss of life.

No tornadoes are expected at this time, though gusty winds may accompany showers and thunderstorms. Stay informed of the latest forecasts from the National Weather Service.
