Storm Surge Warning Issued for Coastal Jefferson County
Coastal Jefferson County is under a Storm Surge Warning with a danger of 4-6 feet of life-threatening inundation from Friday morning to Saturday morning; residents should complete evacuations and preparations immediately.
A Storm Surge Warning has been issued for Coastal Jefferson County, effective October 7 at 11:00 PM EDT, by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee. Life-threatening inundation of 4-6 feet above ground is possible from Friday morning until Saturday morning.
Residents in surge-prone areas should complete evacuation efforts and flood preparations immediately. If evacuation orders are given for your area, leave at once to avoid being cut off from emergency services. This storm surge is expected to cause significant impacts, including damage to buildings near the coast, washed-out escape routes, major beach erosion, and moderate damage to marine structures.
A Tropical Storm Warning is also in effect for Coastal Jefferson County, with tropical storm-force winds remaining possible. Peak wind forecasts are 10-20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph. While the sustained wind should remain below tropical storm force, conditions may be gusty. Listen for instructions from local officials and ensure emergency readiness.
Additional rainfall of 2-4 inches, with localized higher amounts, is expected, posing a potential for moderate flooding. Emergency plans should account for possible evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings to prevent serious injury or loss of life. Rivers and tributaries may swell, and floodwaters could enter structures. Driving conditions may become hazardous with potential road and bridge closures.
The NWS Tallahassee indicates that the situation is unfavorable for tornadoes, and none are expected at this time. For more information, visit NWS Tallahassee, Florida Division of Emergency Management, or Jefferson County Emergency Management.
