Extreme Storm Surge Warning for Coastal Jefferson: Evacuate Immediately

Coastal Jefferson County is under an Extreme Storm Surge Warning with life-threatening storm surge of 4-6 feet possible through Saturday morning, prompting immediate evacuation and shelter orders.

Coastal Jefferson County residents are under an Extreme Storm Surge Warning issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee, FL, effective immediately as of October 9 at 5:05 PM EDT. Life-threatening storm surge of 4-6 feet above ground is possible through Saturday morning.

Flood preparations and ordered evacuations should be complete. Evacuees must be in shelters well away from storm surge flooding. Residents in surge-prone areas are advised to shelter against life-threatening storm surge of greater than 3 feet above ground and to remain in a safe location.

A Flood Watch and Tornado Watch are also in effect. Additional rainfall of 3-6 inches is expected, with potential for major flooding. Many evacuations and rescues are likely due to flooding. A high potential for multiple tornadoes exists. Residents should stay informed and be ready to shelter quickly if a tornado warning is issued.

Winds are forecast to be below tropical storm force, with peaks of 20-30 mph and gusts up to 40 mph. For more information, visit NWS Tallahassee, Florida Division of Emergency Management, or Jefferson County Emergency Management.
