JASPER, MS – A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Jasper by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, MS, effective immediately and expiring at 6:15 PM CDT today, October 9th.

While sustained winds are expected to remain below tropical storm force, with peak gusts between 10-20 mph and possible gusts up to 40 mph, residents should be prepared for potential moderate flooding due to approximately one inch of rainfall. The NWS indicates that moderate rainfall flooding may prompt several evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries could become swollen, and small streams, creeks, canals, and ditches may overflow. Floodwaters could enter some structures or weaken foundations.

Residents in areas vulnerable to flooding should consider protective actions. Heed any flood watches and warnings issued by local officials. Failure to take action may result in serious injury or loss of life. Driving conditions may become hazardous, and some road and bridge closures are possible. Listen for instructions from local officials and ensure emergency readiness should the forecast change. Tornadoes are not expected, but remain informed of any forecast changes.

This alert is active until 6:15 PM CDT today, October 9th. Stay tuned to Day.News for further updates.
