Ms. Katie Rutledge's kindergarten class at a local Jacksonville school recently spent a morning exploring the lowercase letter 's'. The lesson focused on the letter's appearance, formation, and the soft hiss it represents.
Rutledge gathered students on the carpet to introduce the letter. She demonstrated its formation, starting at the top, curving around, and finishing with a small tail. Emphasizing the sound, she compared it to a snake, drawing out the "Sssssss" sound. Children hissed back, noting the letter's visual resemblance to a snake.
At tables, students engaged with the letter using various materials. They traced a large 's' on the carpet with their fingers. Later, they used styluses on small whiteboards to practice the stroke. The class also shaped the letter 's' out of clay, focusing on the motion and the resulting curves.
Rutledge expressed her enthusiasm for teaching kindergarten. "I love teaching kindergarten because I get to witness the magic of that moment when reading finally clicks," she said. "They begin to recognize the letters, connect the sounds, put the pieces together, and suddenly the words on the page have meaning. The excitement on their faces is truly amazing to watch." The class is working toward sounding out simple words and recognizing common sight words by the end of the year.
