Kindergarten classrooms across Jacksonville are focusing on number sense, teaching young students that numbers represent specific quantities through playful, hands-on methods rather than traditional worksheets.

Teachers use tangible items like fingers, cookies and dice to help students grasp quantities, a skill called subitizing, or the instant recognition of small amounts. This ability is a foundational skill for future math success.

Students learn counting by touching each object as they recite number words, establishing one-to-one correspondence. They also develop cardinality, understanding that the final number counted represents the total quantity, through daily practice.

"Kindergartners learn through play as they build number sense and practice the math skills we are learning in fun, meaningful ways," said kindergarten teacher Amanda Yarberry.

As children become comfortable with small groups of objects, they begin to see larger numbers as combinations of smaller ones. For example, understanding that five cookies and two more make seven helps students grasp addition. Teachers ensure students create a clear mental picture of quantities before introducing abstract symbols.

"I am always so proud of them when you see their excitement and confidence grow when they understand a new concept independently!" Ms. Yarberry said.

Parents can support this learning by counting items with their children during everyday interactions.
