UI Periodontist Ganesan Delivers Keynote on Oral Health Disparities in Puerto Rico

Breadcrumb Home News Ganesan delivers open plenary address at annual scientific conference Thursday, June 4, 2026 Sukirth Ganesan, associate professor and director of the Advanced Education Program in Periodontics at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, recently served as the open plenary session speaker at the 20th PHSU-PRI Annual Scientific Conference and fourth RCMI Symposium on Health Disparities in Ponce, Puerto Rico. His keynote highlighted ongoing research examining how obesity and metabolic syndrome influence the oral microbiome, host immune responses, and oral-systemic health. The lecture also addressed the disproportionate burden of chronic disease in underserved populations and the importance of interdisciplinary approaches to reducing health disparities.Hosted by Ponce Research Institute, the conference brought together more than 500 attendees, including high school students, trainees, health care professionals, researchers, and community leaders. The diverse audience created a unique environment for scientific exchange, mentorship, and discussions focused on improving health equity and health care outcomes across communities.

Quiet and unassuming, yet always present and willing to lend a helping hand, he is truly an ambassador for our student research program!”  – Teresa Marshall, professor of preventive and community dentistryHometown: Germantown Hills, IllinoisFaculty mentors/advisors: Kecia Leary, DDS, MS, associate dean of clinics and clinical professor of pediatric dentistry, College of Dentistry; Teresa Morgan, DDS, MS, clinical associate professor of oral and maxillofacial surgery, College of DentistryDegree program and anticipated graduation date: Doctor of Dental Surgery, 2026Jeremiah Poppen studies the types of incidents that occur in dental settings—from medical emergencies to falls—to help improve safety protocols and emergency preparedness. His research aims to equip dentists, often first responders in office emergencies, to manage unexpected situations confidently and effectively. The data he has collected has already improved incident reporting and patient care within the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics.“Research has given me a chance to exercise problem-solving skills that have shaped how I think about situations inside and out of school,” says Poppen. “I’m grateful for the supportive faculty who have helped me grow as a student and future clinician.”Poppen has presented his work at local and national conferences and served in leadership roles for the college’s Student Research Program. 2025 Water Consumer Confidence Report Available

To meet Safe Drinking Water Act mandates for consumer notification, all community water supplies like North Liberty are required to publish an annual Consumer Confidence Report. The report for 2025 is now available online. This and all past reports are available here. The report contains important information regarding the water quality in our water system. The source of our water is groundwater. Our water quality testing shows our system is fully in compliance. These reports include information about various water quality parameters and testing results. UI Dentistry Professor Teresa Marshall Named 2025-26 Mentor of the Year

Breadcrumb Home News 2026 Mentor of the Year Dr. Teresa Marshall was named the 2025-2026 Student Research Mentor of the Year by the Iowa Chapter of the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research. Thursday, June 4, 2026 Current dental student researchers nominated student research mentors for Mentor of the Year awards. All student researchers voted on the nominations, and recipients of the award receive a plaque, and their name is added to a plaque in the Iowa Institute for Oral Health Research. Dr. Teresa Marshall, director of the Dental Student Research Group at the University of Iowa and the Finkelstein Centennial Professor of Teaching, was named the 2025-26 Student Research Mentor of the Year by the Iowa Chapter of the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research. She was nominated by her student, third-year dental student, Katy Volz (shown above with Dr. Marshall). This award was presented in recognition of her efforts to enhance students research at the College of Dentistry.
