Dangerous Rip Currents, High Surf Expected on Outer Banks Beaches Today
A Beach Hazards Statement for dangerous rip currents and a High Surf Advisory for large waves are in effect today for Ocracoke and Hatteras Islands, prompting officials to warn against swimming.
Beachgoers on Ocracoke and Hatteras Islands are advised to stay out of the water today due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Newport/Morehead City NC. This statement, effective from 8 AM EDT this morning until 8 PM EDT this evening, warns of dangerous rip currents.
Additionally, a High Surf Advisory will be in effect from 8 PM EDT this evening until 8 PM EDT Sunday, with large breaking waves of 6 to 8 feet expected in the surf zone. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to these hazardous conditions.
Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. If caught in a rip current, the NWS advises remaining calm. Swim in a direction following the shoreline. If tired, float or tread water until out of the rip current. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. The most likely time for strong rip currents today is around 2:00 PM, which is low tide.
These conditions pose a risk of dangerous swimming and surfing, as well as localized beach erosion.
