Rip Current Statement Issued for Coastal Horry and Georgetown Counties
A Rip Current Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory have been issued for Coastal Horry and Georgetown Counties, warning of dangerous rip currents through Sunday evening and minor coastal flooding Sunday morning.
Residents and visitors in Coastal Horry and Coastal Georgetown Counties should exercise extreme caution due to a Rip Current Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Wilmington NC.
Dangerous rip currents are expected from 6 AM EDT Sunday, October 11, through Sunday evening. A strong south to north longshore current is also anticipated.
A Coastal Flood Advisory is also in effect from 7 AM to 10 AM EDT Sunday, October 11. Up to half a foot of inundation above ground level is expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. This may cause minor coastal flooding on vulnerable causeways to and from local beaches, as well as low-lying roads and locations along the Intracoastal Waterway and adjacent tidal creeks.
If travel is necessary during the advisory, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.
For those entering the water, swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. Check with local officials for the latest information regarding coastal flood impacts and closures.
