Beach Hazards and Minor Coastal Flooding Expected for Coastal Horry Today

Coastal Horry County is under a Beach Hazards Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory until this evening, with strong longshore currents and minor coastal flooding expected. Exercise caution in and near the water, and prepare for potential road closures.

Coastal Horry County residents and visitors should exercise caution in and around the water today, October 6, due to a Beach Hazards Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Wilmington NC. Both advisories are in effect until this evening.

A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect until 8:00 PM EDT, warning of strong north to south longshore currents. These currents can sweep swimmers and surfers into rip currents, piers, jetties, and other hazardous areas, making it difficult to return to shore. Always check with lifeguards before entering the ocean.

Additionally, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until 7:00 PM EDT. This advisory forecasts up to one half foot of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Minor coastal flooding is expected to impact vulnerable causeways to and from local beaches, as well as low-lying roads and locations along the Intracoastal Waterway and adjacent tidal creeks.

If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. Residents are advised to check with local officials for the latest information regarding coastal flood impacts and closures.
