Residents on Niihau, Kauai, and Oahu should prepare for strong east winds beginning Saturday, September 26, at 6:00 AM HST. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Honolulu has issued a Wind Advisory, effective until Sunday, September 27, at 6:00 PM HST.
East winds are forecast to be between 25 to 35 mph, with gusts potentially reaching 55 mph. The NWS indicates that the strongest winds are expected on Oahu, particularly over and downwind of elevated terrain. Areas specifically affected include Niihau; Kauai Southwest, Mountains, North, East, and South; and Oahu's North Shore, Olomana, Central Oahu, Waianae Coast, Waianae Mountains, East Honolulu, Honolulu Metro, Ewa Plain, Koolau Windward, and Koolau Leeward.
These wind conditions can lead to falling tree branches, damage to shingles, and can make it difficult to control high-profile vehicles. The NWS advises residents to watch for falling tree branches when walking or driving. Ensure that tents and awnings are secured or taken down. Residents should also prepare for potential power outages.
