Waste Reduction

Waste Reduction Polystyrene and Single-Use Plastic Reduction The City of Hollywood recognizes that strong and environmentally sensitive litter ordinances protect Hollywood's environment and wildlife and promote the health, safety, and welfare of its citizens. Plastics are especially pernicious as they break up into smaller and smaller pieces. Particles of plastic are ingested by wildlife such as shorebirds, sea turtles, and fish. By regulating disposable plastic food service packaging, we can reduce the amount of single-use plastic and polystyrene, also known as Styrofoam, that becomes litter, degrades our beaches and ocean waters, and harms sea life. These ordinances drive the City to lead by example by reducing its own solid waste, and they advance the goals in the Sustainability Action Plan. Business Resources Reusables calculator This tool from Debris Free Oceans calculates the estimated cost savings and environmental benefits that businesses will obtain by using reusable instead of disposable products. Savings estimates can be calculated for a variety of disposable products, including straws, cutlery, cups, plates, and bowls. Responsible products catalog Debris Free Oceans created this easily searchable database that provides sustainable alternatives to single-use plastic and polystyrene disposable products. Most of these items are backyard/cold-compostable and will break down in the environment. All products in this catalog are from southeast Florida businesses to support the local economy and reduce our carbon footprint. Anyone can apply to be part of the guide at this link. "Compostable" bioplastics are not featured because these materials must be processed in industrial composting facilities, which do not exist in Florida, and because they behave similarly to traditional oil-based plastics in the environment. Aluminum-canned still and sparkling water options are featured because aluminum is the most efficiently recycled material. Boxed water options are not featured because they are often lined with plastic PLA. Ban on Intentional Release of Balloons The City also recognizes that the release of balloons poses a threat to the environment and wildlife. Thus, in 2020, the City Commission approved a ban on the intentional release of balloons in the City of Hollywood. These ordinances are in Chapter 97. Composting With Worms (Vermicomposting) Composting is an easy way you can turn food scraps and other organic waste material into a soil amendment that is full of nutrients, and you can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the same time. Food waste breaking down in landfills produces methane, which has almost 25 times the heat-trapping power of carbon dioxide. Compost is an excellent soil amendment in your landscape or garden. You can save money by producing it at home. Vermicomposting uses worms in a contained system to produce compost. It makes composting feasible for people in apartments and condominiums or who have limited or no outdoor space. To learn more about vermicomposting, see the presentation slides from the joint vermicomposting workshop held on June 1, 2019, for residents of the Cities of Hollywood and Hallandale Beach. Go Zero Waste! On November 14, 2017, in honor of America Recycles Day, the City of Hollywood and the City of Hallandale Beach teamed up to host a workshop aimed at empowering residents of the two cities to reduce waste. Check out the resources below to learn: - why zero waste should be a goal - what impact waste has on the environment, particularly marine systems - how to recycle right - why recycling isn't always the answer - how to determine where you can reduce waste by conducting a home waste audit - real strategies to reduce waste - do-it-yourself recipes for commonly purchased items to reduce waste from packaging, save money, and be healthy Workshop resources: - Workshop Presentation - The presentation goes through the reasons to go zero waste, the impact of marine debris, the pros and cons of recycling, instructions for how to recycle right, and some inspiring leaders in the zero waste world. - At Home Waste Audit - Grab your trash bins, a tarp, a pencil and get your hands dirty to figure out the best ways you can reduce waste. After all, you can't manage what you don't measure! - Zero Waste Pledge - Commit to going zero waste. Take the pledge and choose from the ideas listed to get yourself started. - DIY Instruction Book - Learn how to reduce waste, save money, and improve your health by making your own commonly purchased cleaning supplies, toiletries, and food items. Read advice on how to take your own containers to buy dry goods in bulk. Hollywood Recycling Resources - Residential Recycling. Residents who are Hollywood Sanitation customers can use this site to learn their collection schedule and understand acceptable materials. - Disposal and Recycling Directory. Learn how to properly recycle or dispose of any item. - Recycle Plastic Bags and Plastic Film. Participating drop-off locations will take a wide variety of plastic film like zip-top bags, bubble wrap and bread bags along with plastic shopping bags. Green Resolutions

Green your life with these five resolutions! 1. Reduce your carbon footprint by becoming a part-time vegetarian. The City of Hollywood adopted Broward County's goal of an 80% carbon emission reduction by 2050. Did you know that about a quarter of a City's upstream greenhouse gas emissions are related to food? One way to reduce the impact of your diet is to reduce your meat consumption. The good news for meat lovers is that even eliminating meat from one meal or one day a week can have an impact. Buying local and reducing food waste are also great steps to reducing the climate impact of your meals. Join a movement! Check out Meatless Monday. Think you'll miss the meat? Try some carnivore approved recipes. Reduce food waste at home with these tools from the EPA. Want to eat local? Consider buying a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) share. 2. Improve recycling by trashing the bag. The City of Hollywood aims to reduce its recycling contamination rates from 24% to 10% by 2025, with the ultimate goal of no contamination. Did you know that single use plastic bags are the number one source of recycling contamination? Although recyclable, these bags CAN NOT be put in your bin with your comingled recycling. Take the bags to the bins at your store or, better yet, eliminate their use all together by switching to cloth bags. Learn more about recycling on the Public Works page of the website. Your reusable bags near the end of their life? Repurpose them with artists and crafters to be turned in to useful products by sending them to Chico Bag's zero waste program. 3. Reduce the Urban Heat Island Effect by planting a tree. The City of Hollywood is aiming to meet the County's goal of 40% tree canopy cover. Tree canopy is also an excellent way to decrease the Urban Heat Island Effect which is warming cities faster than other areas resulting in high cooling costs and heat related health impacts. Trees have incredible benefits including reducing temperatures in urban areas. Lower temperatures reduce health risks related to heat, improves storm water quality, and lowers energy bills. Learn more about the benefits of trees and how to maintain a hurricane resilient canopy by visiting the sustainability page of the website. 4. Help maintain Hollywood's Community Wildlife Habitat Certification by certifying your yard. Gardening for wildlife not only provides habitat for native and migratory birds and butterflies and creates connections between natural areas, it also is beautiful, low maintenance, and low cost! Learn more about the benefits and how to certify at NatureScape Broward. 5. Reduce marine debris by reaching your last straw! Americans use 500 million straws a day. Straws are common components of beach trash, can harm ocean life such as sea turtles, and are not recyclable. They are also typically unnecessary. Next time you order a drink remember to say "no straw, please"! Ask your favorite restaurant to institute a straws only upon request policy or to do away with them outright. And don't worry if you like to use a straw, there are plenty of reusable or biodegradable options! Learn other ways to reduce waste on the Waste Reduction page of the website. When you choose any of these five actions, make sure to post online with the tag #seenbeinggreen!

Climate Change

"Sea Level Rise and Regional Resiliency The sea level is rising and we in Hollywood are experiencing it through sunny day flooding events. The frequency has been less than 8 days/year thus far. With sea level rise above 2 feet NAVD by 2060, the frequency would be 226 days/year. Thus, the US Army Corps of Engineers and Broward County conducted a study of flood risk management in Hollywood Lakes and Las Olas Isles in the City of Fort Lauderdale. They modeled different seawall heights to see how well the walls would protect the land from overtopping by king tides and storms of varying strength. Based on these findings, the Broward County Commission is considering new regulations for seawall heights. These regulations would be an integral part of a holistic approach the County is crafting to address tidal flooding and surge protection. Broward County is proposing seawalls that are 4 feet NAVD by 2035 and 5 feet NAVD by 2050, allowing 2 years for municipal implementation. Resilience features like this will help prevent large increases in national flood insurance rates. Climate Mayors In June 2017, Mayor Josh Levy joined Climate Mayors. Climate Mayors (aka the Mayors National Climate Action Agenda) is a Mayor-to-Mayor network of US Mayors collaborating on climate. There are no binding commitments as a Climate Mayors member, only that cities are pursuing actions to achieve an emissions reduction target through: - Developing a community Greenhouse Gas (GHG) inventory - Setting near- and long-term targets to reduce emissions - Developing a Climate Action Plan aligned with the city's targets Members of the Climate Mayors network are asked to join in occasional letters and statements, such as the following: STATEMENT FROM THE CLIMATE MAYORS IN RESPONSE TO PRESIDENT TRUMP'S WITHDRAWAL FROM THE PARIS CLIMATE AGREEMENT Thursday, June 1st 2017 The President's denial of global warming is getting a cold reception from America's cities. As 246 US Mayors representing 56 million Americans, we will adopt, honor, and uphold the commitments to the goals enshrined in the Paris Agreement. We will intensify efforts to meet each of our cities' current climate goals, push for new action to meet the 1.5 degrees Celsius target, and work together to create a 21st century clean energy economy. We will continue to lead. We are increasing investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency. We will buy and create more demand for electric cars and trucks. We will increase our efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions, create a clean energy economy, and stand for environmental justice. And if the President wants to break the promises made to our allies enshrined in the historic Paris Agreement, we'll build and strengthen relationships around the world to protect the planet from devastating climate risks. The world cannot wait — and neither will we. Signed, Mayor Josh Levy City of Hollywood, FL Commitment to Climate Action In June 2017, the City Commission voted on Resolution R-2017-168 to reaffirm its commitment to climate action. R-2017-168: A Resolution Of The City Commission Of The City Of Hollywood, Florida, To Reaffirm Commitment To Climate Action And The Climate Goals Set Out In The City's Sustainability Action Plan, To Support The Principles And Goals Of The Paris Agreement, And To Continue To Implement Actions To Meet Established Climate Mitigation Goals. What are the City's Climate Action Plans? Within the City's Sustainability Action Plan exist metrics, goals and actions designed to reduce the City's carbon emissions: Metric: Greenhouse Gas Emissions - 80% reduction by 2050 Goal: Resiliency and Adaptation Goal #1: Reduce the City's contribution to the driving causes of sea level rise and climate change. Actions to reduce GHG emissions: Action 1: Include sustainability criteria in all City plans and guidelines Action 8: Improve energy efficiency at City properties Action 9: Adopt green procurement policies Action 12: Increase the renewable energy generated and used by the City Action 14: Retrofit street lights to LED Action 21: Track community scale greenhouse gas emissions and set reduction targets Action 35: Create zoning regulations to encourage multi-modal transit Action 37: Enhance green building program Action 46: Mitigate Urban Heat Island Action 56: Develop energy efficiency programs Action 59: Increase renewable energy generation city wide Action 65: Decrease emissions related to solid waste Action 72: Reduce air pollution related to vehicles Action 75: Increase air quality by planting trees Action 86: Increase the transit options available in the City Action 87: Increase ridership on existing transit system Action 88: Improve the City's bike infrastructure Action 90: Enhance walkability in the City Action 91: Create parking policies that will decrease vehicle miles traveled and congestion related to parking Action 93: Increase the number of vehicles which are fuel efficient or use alternative fuels"
