Holiday residents who purchased frozen berries from Walmart or Trader Joe's should check their freezers. A recall initially announced in July has been expanded for the third time, with the latest update last week including additional lots of Great Value frozen organic blueberries and berry blends, and Trader Joe's frozen mixed berry blend. This expansion is particularly relevant as many residents prepare for holiday gatherings.
The recall stems from potential E. coli O145 contamination, according to the Food and Drug Administration. E. coli O145 can cause severe abdominal cramps and diarrhea. While most individuals recover within a week, some may develop hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure.
Affected Walmart products include 10-ounce packages of Great Value frozen Organic Triple Berry Blend (UPC: 7874211226) with lot codes 603101 and 604101, and 10-ounce packages of Great Value frozen Organic Blueberries (UPC: 7874211213) with lot codes 601901, 604001, and 616301. The recalled Trader Joe's product is a 12-ounce package of Trader Joe’s frozen Mix Berry Blend with UPC 00977654 and lot code 605101.
Great Value frozen fruit reached Walmart stores in 30 states and Puerto Rico. Trader Joe's frozen fruit went to select stores across various states and Washington, D.C. Consumers should not consume the recalled products and can return them to their place of purchase for a full refund.
