A copyright infringement lawsuit filed in federal court in Los Angeles alleges that Olivia Dean's song "I've Seen It" infringes on Bill Withers' Grammy-winning hit "Just the Two of Us." Mattie Music Group, which controls Withers' music catalog, brought the suit. It claims the songs share striking musical similarities that are not coincidental.
The lawsuit names Capitol Records, Universal Music Group, Sony Publishing, and Kobalt Music Publishing America as co-defendants. Mattie Music Group alerted them to the suit in August.
To prove plagiarism, Mattie Music Group must show that the writers of "I've Seen It" had access to Withers' original song. Dean previously told W Magazine she wrote "I've Seen It" after drinking red wine, describing it as being about various types of love she has experienced.
"I've Seen It" has approximately 248 million streams on Spotify. "Just the Two of Us" has 948 million streams.
