The parallel ridges of gravel in the foreground run nearly east and west, and coalesce at each end, near the edges of the picture, to form an elongated kettle-hole. The ridges from fifty to sixty feet in height. Historic American Buildings Survey, Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. The house was originally built by Joseph Andrews, Hingham's first constable and first town clerk, likely in 1640. Although now clapboarded, the house was originally of timber frame construction and was Hingham's first garrison house. It boasted massive timbers and thick log walls and was used by
