Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Henry County: Prepare for Severe Weather

A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Henry County, including Abbeville and Headland, with residents urged to prepare immediately for dangerous winds, major flooding, and the potential for tornadoes. Actions to protect life and property should be underway now.

A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Henry County, effective immediately. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Tallahassee, FL, issued the warning today, October 9, at 8:28 AM EDT, and it is set to expire at 4:30 PM UTC on the same day. Abbeville and Headland are specifically affected.

Residents should prepare for dangerous wind, with peak gusts up to 45 mph, and potential for sustained winds of 58 to 73 mph. Significant damage to property, including roofing, siding, and mobile homes, is possible. Large trees may be snapped or uprooted, leading to impassable roads and scattered power outages. Efforts to protect life and property should be underway now.

A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 2-4 inches of rain expected, potentially leading to major flooding. Evacuations and rescues are likely. Heed any flood watches and warnings, as failure to take action could result in serious injury or loss of life. Major rainfall flooding may prompt many evacuations and rescues. Rivers and streams may overflow, and floodwaters could enter structures, making escape routes impassable.

The situation is favorable for tornadoes, with the potential for several, some possibly intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should relocate to safe shelter before hazardous weather arrives. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if issued. Scattered tornadoes can cause considerable damage, power loss, and communications failures. For more information, visit NWS Tallahassee and Alabama Emergency Management Agency.
