Strong Thunderstorm Threatens Harlan and Letcher Counties

Residents in Harlan and Letcher counties should seek shelter indoors immediately due to a strong thunderstorm identified by Doppler radar. The National Weather Service in Jackson, KY, issued a Special Weather Statement at 11:25 PM EDT on September 21, 2026, warning of wind gusts up to 50 mph and pea-sized hail.

The storm, currently located over Ages, or near Harlan, is moving east at 10 mph. Gusty winds could cause tree limbs to fall and unsecured objects to blow around. Minor hail damage to vegetation is also possible. This alert is effective until 12:00 AM EDT on September 22, 2026.
