Severe Thunderstorm Warning: Harlan Residents Seek Immediate Shelter

HARLAN, KY – A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Harlan, Kentucky, effective immediately until 12:30 AM EDT on September 22, 2026. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson, KY, issued the warning at 12:09 AM EDT.

At 12:09 AM EDT, a severe thunderstorm was located over Elcomb, or directly over Harlan, moving east at 20 mph. This storm is capable of producing 60 mph wind gusts and penny-sized hail. The NWS indicates that radar has confirmed these hazards.

Residents are advised to expect damage to roofs, siding, and trees. The severe storm is expected to be over Harlan around 12:15 AM EDT. Other locations in the path of this severe thunderstorm include Evarts and Crummies.

For your protection, move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building. Torrential rainfall is occurring with this storm and may lead to flash flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways.
