NMDOT urges drivers to prepare for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms NMDOT urges drivers to prepare for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms Sep 22, 2026 | Press Release Weather may create hazardous travel conditions across New Mexico SANTA FE – The New Mexico Department of Transportation is urging motorists to use extreme caution as widespread thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are expected across New Mexico Tuesday through Thursday. The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch from noon Tuesday, Sept. 22, through 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, for much of New Mexico. Heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding, particularly in low-lying areas, arroyos, normally dry washes and locations with poor drainage. Storms may develop quickly and produce heavy rainfall, damaging winds and small hail. Motorists should be prepared for rapidly changing road conditions, reduced visibility, standing water, debris and possible roadway closures. Flash flood and severe weather driving tips Turn around, don’t drown. Never drive through a flooded roadway or around barricades. Water may be deeper or moving faster than it appears, and the roadway beneath the water may be damaged or washed away. Never enter a flooded arroyo or low-water crossing. Arroyos and normally dry washes can fill rapidly, even when rain is falling miles away. Obey road closures and barricades. They are placed for your safety. Never move, drive around or ignore a barricade closing a flooded or damaged roadway. Slow down and buckle up. Wet pavement increases stopping distance and the risk of hydroplaning. Reduce your speed and always wear your seat belt. Increase following distance. Leave additional space between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead to allow more time to react and stop. Use your headlights. Turn on your headlights during rain and low-visibility conditions so you can see and be seen. Do not use cruise control. Maintaining direct control of your speed can help you respond more quickly if your vehicle begins to lose traction. Watch for debris and roadway damage. Heavy rain can wash rocks, mud, branches and other debris onto roadways and can undermine pavement. Treat dark traffic signals as four-way stops. Storms may cause power outages. Approach intersections cautiously and be prepared for signals that are not operating. Avoid unnecessary travel during the heaviest storms. When possible, delay travel until conditions improve. Stay informed. Check weather forecasts and road conditions before traveling and never attempt to check a phone or mobile device while driving. If visibility becomes too poor to safely continue driving, find a safe location completely off the roadway and away from areas prone to flooding. Do not stop in travel lanes, beneath overpasses or in low-lying areas where water may rise quickly. NMDOT crews will monitor roadways throughout the weather event and respond to flooding, debris and other hazards as conditions allow. Drivers should never assume a roadway is safe simply because water appears shallow. Motorists are encouraged to check current road conditions before traveling at NMRoads.com or by calling 511. 48th Annual Conference on Aging postponed due to severe weather by Candice WilhiteQuiro | Sep 22, 2026 | Latest News New conference dates will be October 19-21 SANTA FE – The New Mexico Aging and Long-Term Services Department (ALTSD) has postponed the 48th Annual New Mexico Conference on Aging scheduled for September 23-24 in Glorieta due to forecasts of severe flooding. The National Weather Service is forecasting a significant surge of monsoon moisture beginning Tuesday, with widespread heavy rainfall and an increased potential for life-threatening flash flooding. “Bringing New Mexicans together to learn, connect and celebrate is incredibly important, but safety has to come first,” said Emily Kaltenbach, Aging Department secretary. “This was not an easy decision, especially given the tremendous amount of effort that has gone into preparing for this years’ conference. We look forward to gathering in October when we can do so safely.” The decision to postpone was made out of an abundance of caution and concern for the health and safety of everyone involved. Close to 2,000 people registered for the conference, themed “Caring Across Generations.” The conference programming will highlight the many ways New Mexicans support each other—caring for aging parents, grandparents raising grandchildren, supporting neighbors and helping older adults remain active and connected to their communities. The conference will be rescheduled for October 19-21, 2026. Attendees and participants are encouraged to monitor the ALTSD website and social media channels for updates. Attention Hunters: New Mexico needs your help to be on the lookout for New World screwworm - NMDOW Skip to content Attention Hunters: New Mexico needs your help to be on the lookout for New World screwworm New World screwworm detected near Mimbres; hunters are asked to help On Sept. 17, 2026, the New Mexico Department of Agriculture announced a new case of New World screwworm (NWS) that has been detected near Mimbres, New Mexico. Individuals that are hunting in the area are asked to help reduce the spread of NWS. New World screwworm is a parasitic fly whose larvae feed on living tissue of warm-blooded mammals. All hunters can help All hunters who have recently been in the Infested Zone or Adjacent Surveillance Zone can report suspicious larva that they noticed while on their hunt. Reports related to livestock can be sent to the New Mexico Livestock Board at 505-841-6161. Reports from wildlife, including harvested game, can be emailed to the New Mexico Department of Wildlife at [email protected]. Interactive Infested Zone Map: Hunters traveling with livestock The New Mexico Livestock Board requires that all people, including hunters, outfitters and guides, traveling out of an infested zone with a mule, horse or other livestock animal must meet the following criteria in this link. For questions related to movement restrictions, please contact the NMLB. An inspection site may become available at a future date. Check the New World screwworm page for updated information. While hunting and after harvesting game animals Suspect NWS when you see a live or very recently (within a few hours) dead animal with: ➤ Maggots/larvae in a wound ➤ White egg packets on or around a wound ➤ Foul or rotting odor associated with a wound Pay particular attention during periods when wildlife are more likely to sustain wounds, including rut, fighting among males, breeding activity, antler growth, velvet shedding, antler casting, birthing season and newborn animals with umbilical wounds. If you see suspected NWS: Take a GPS location. If it is a game animal, contact the New Mexico Department of Wildlife as soon as possible at 888-248-6866 during regular business hours. After hours or on weekends, please call your local conservation officer. If it is a livestock animal, contact the New Mexico Livestock Board at 505-841-6161 as soon as possible. Do not eat, handle or transport the animal. Take pictures of the wound, larvae or affected animal if possible. If you can, collect a sample safely. Using gloves or tweezers, place several larvae into a sealed container (small jar or plastic vial) with 70% alcohol. Label with date, GPS location, species and your contact info. Report and submit immediately to the New Mexico Department of Wildlife or the New Mexico Livestock Board. Your reports are critical for early detection and rapid response. Quick action could protect wildlife and livestock across the state. *** Please remember that even minor mishandling of game meat can cause non-NWS maggots to develop in muscle tissue. State selects regional leads to improve rural health access SANTA FE — The New Mexico Health Care Authority (HCA) has selected five organizations to lead a new effort to bring better health care to rural, frontier, and tribal communities. The initiative, called Healthy Horizons, comes with more than $74 million to help these communities get access to doctors, specialists and other care close to home. Healthy Horizons is part of New Mexico’s five-year Rural Health Transformation Program and will support better access to specialty, maternal, behavioral health, chronic disease, and other health care services for rural New Mexicans. Selected Regional Hub Organizations will work with local providers and community partners to identify needs, set priorities, and develop plans to bring care closer to home. The selected Regional Hub Organizations and regional allocations are: REGION 1: Cibola General Hospital / Gallup Community Health — up to $12,050,515.13 REGION 2: The Regents of the University of New Mexico — up to $9,028,546.85 REGION 3: The Regents of the University of New Mexico — up to $10,168,351.01, including $1,370,133.20 for statewide maternal health planning REGION 4: Eastern Plains Council of Governments — up to $7,904,851.99 REGION 5: Gila Regional Medical Center — up to $15,226,026.46 REGION 6: Nor-Lea Hospital District — up to $19,682,962.74 The regional allocations total $74,061,254.18. Funding will support approved Regional Hub activities and future regional health care priorities. HCA must approve budgets, scopes of work and implementation plans before funds are used. “Healthy Horizons is built around the idea that rural communities know their needs best,” said Elisa Wrede, acting rural health director. “These regional leads will bring local partners together, identify gaps in care and help develop solutions that meet the needs of their communities.” HCA will now work with each Regional Hub Organization to finalize budgets and scopes of work and begin regional planning and community engagement. Organizations that were not selected as Regional Hub Organizations may still have opportunities to take part in Healthy Horizons as regional plans are developed. New Mexico’s Rural Health Transformation (RHT) Program is a five-year, federally funded initiative focused on expanding access to care, strengthening the rural health workforce, and supporting long-term sustainability for providers serving rural, frontier, and tribal communities. Taking advantage of cooler temperatures, shorter days and recent moisture, Carson National Forest fire crews are looking to implement two prescribed fires for the first half of the fall on the western side of the Valle Vidal. The exact timing of each will depend on specific wind, weather and fuel moisture conditions. Crews will be preparing the area in advance of the burns and patrolling during and after ignitions. Hunters should plan for smoke in the air. Please visit Carson National Forest’s website for more information. Regular fire helps restore the ecosystem and can reduce the threat of a catastrophic wildfire severely affecting the recently restored population of Rio Grande cutthroat trout, a project more than 20 years in the making. It also helps wildlife and local producers, and maintains productive rangelands that support local grazers.

Anyone can fish without a license in public fishing waters throughout the state on Saturday and Sunday, which is also National Hunting and Fishing Day nationwide. All anglers must observe bag limits and all other rules and regulations.
