Residential construction is a major contributor to Florida's economy, but for every housing unit built the demand for resources like energy, water and land grows. Because of this, it is important now, more than ever, to build sustainable communities, which follow environmentally-friendly design and construction practices. When it comes to building a sustainable community, UF/IFAS Extension can help. Through educational materials, applied research, and initiatives like the Program for Resource Efficient Communities (PREC), UF/IFAS Extension can provide you with the information you need to live more sustainably.

When it comes to building a sustainable community, UF/IFAS Extension can help. Through educational materials, applied research, and initiatives like the Program for Resource Efficient Communities (PREC), UF/IFAS Extension can provide you with the information you need to live more sustainably. Sustainability Starts Here Building a sustainable community begins with individual impact. Through PREC, UF/IFAS Extension offers resources to help you reduce environmental deterioration within your community. PREC supports sustainable community development via direct training, education and consultation. Find out how you can get involved in your local community to minimize waste and non-renewable resource consumption. Florida-Friendly Partners PREC works closely with local certification agencies to promote sustainable design, performance and management practices for community development. Some of these agencies include Audubon International, the Florida Green Building Coalition, the U.S. Green Building Council and the St. Johns River Water Management District's Florida Water Star program. See how these organizations are promoting more sustainable development. Community Planning & Design Getting involved on a local level is an integral part of developing sustainable communities. PREC works with local government through conducting educational workshops and overseeing the implementation of resource efficiency strategies and low-impact design practices that span the house, lot and community levels. PREC also influences real development projects and reviews residential and reviews plans for conservation.

Tourism Development

Tourism Development | Okaloosa County Mission: The mission of the Tourism Development Department (TDD) is to make time spent here, whether visiting living or working, more valuable to all. Fitting, because many residents today began as a tourist! Okaloosa County is a destination rich in family-friendly experiences. Whether visiting the winding rivers flowing through north county tree lines, parks and recreational points of interest or spending a few days at the white sandy beaches reflecting upon the Gulf of Mexico shoreline, the TDD promises to get kids outside... on the water to give their adventurous side room to grow! Why is tourism important for Okaloosa county? Tourism impacts the local economy in many ways; by creating jobs, contributing to sales tax, infrastructure surtax, contributing to small business revenue, and in our countywide tourist development district, they also fund tourism-related amenities, activities, environmental improvements, protection, restoration and preservation. Local residents play an important part in making tourists feel welcome through advocacy and hospitality. What actions make you more comfortable when traveling? Ensure compliance with state statutes and local ordinances as required The TDD is solely funded by a 6% lodging tax paid by visitors staying overnight in short-term rentals in Okaloosa County. Short-term overnight rentals include hotels, motels, resort motels, apartments, apartment motels, rooming houses, mobile home parks, recreational vehicle parks, condominiums, condominium hotels, timeshare resorts, residential dwellings or campgrounds for a term of 6 months or less. The Florida Statute 125.0104 permits the Board of County Commissioners of Okaloosa County to levy Tourist Development Tax (TDT), and Chapter 20 Article II, Sections 71-78 of the Okaloosa County Ordinances created the Tourist Development Council, established the initial tax rate collection, and identified the special taxing districts with Okaloosa.
