USD Rolls Out Fast-Track Teacher Certification for SD Math, Science Gaps

VERMILLION, S.D. — The University of South Dakota School of Education unveiled a new streamlined certification pathway this spring to tackle South Dakota's persistent teacher shortages in math and science, building on its recent placement of 112 teacher candidates in local and regional classrooms for the 2024-2025 school year. Of those candidates, 43 are set to graduate in December 2024 and 69 in May 2025, specializing in fields including biology, chemistry, special education and early childhood development. USD officials say the program accelerates entry for aspiring educators amid statewide vacancies that hit hardest in rural districts like those in western South Dakota.

This initiative complements the state-funded South Dakota Teacher Apprenticeship Pathway (SD TAP), now recruiting its fourth cohort of up to 40 paraprofessionals for a two-year bachelor's program in elementary, special education or secondary education, including high-shortage STEM areas. Partnering with Dakota State University and Northern State University, SD TAP allows participants to work full-time as aides while completing virtual evening coursework, culminating in student teaching in their home districts. Applications close April 15, 2026, with classes starting that fall and funding ending May 2028; preference goes to those with prior college credits.

USD's Teacher Pathway, established in 2017 with the Sioux Falls School District, further inspires high schoolers toward teaching careers through partnerships across the state. As South Dakota's teacher shortage persists — exacerbated in rural areas per a 2023 NSF-funded study on STEM gaps — these programs align with broader efforts backed by Gov. Kristi Noem, the Department of Labor and Regulation, and the Board of Regents. USD's response emphasizes innovation to serve schools from Pierre to Rapid City, where demand for qualified math and science instructors remains acute.
