Burlington PD Nabs Man in 20+ Bike Theft Spree Near Church Street

Burlington Police Department apprehended a local man Thursday in connection with a series of brazen bike thefts targeting racks near Church Street Marketplace, Vermont's premier pedestrian destination. The suspect, whose name has not been released pending formal charges, is accused of stealing over 20 bicycles in recent weeks, stripping riders of their primary mode of transport in the walkable Queen City core. Officers recovered most of the stolen property from a nearby storage site, including high-end models valued at thousands of dollars.

The thefts, reported steadily since early April 2026, prompted an intensive investigation by BPD's property crimes unit. Witnesses described the culprit using bolt cutters to snip locks under cover of night, often just steps from popular spots like Farmstand Market and the Vermont Pub & Brewery. Church Street, a hub for University of Vermont students and summer visitors, sees hundreds of bikes secured daily; the spree disrupted local businesses and fueled community frustration over urban cycling vulnerabilities.

Chief Jon Murad praised the swift arrest, crediting tips from Marketplace merchants and surveillance footage. "This operation restores confidence in our downtown," Murad said in a Vermont Public interview. The recovered bikes are being held for owners to claim at BPD headquarters on North Avenue, with police urging riders to register via the city's Bike Index program. No other suspects are sought, though investigators are probing links to similar incidents in Winooski.
