Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Wewahitchka, Prepare for Hazardous Winds

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Wewahitchka, signaling potential hazardous winds and moderate flooding rain; residents should complete preparations now.

Staff Writer
10/07/2026 · Gulf County edition

A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Wewahitchka, effective October 7 at 2:09 PM EDT by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee, FL. This means tropical storm-force winds are possible within the next 48 hours.

Residents in Wewahitchka should complete preparations now as hazardous winds of equivalent tropical storm force are anticipated. Efforts to protect property should be underway. The NWS forecasts peak winds of 15-25 mph with gusts up to 30 mph, with potential for winds of 39 to 57 mph. Potential impacts include damage to lightweight structures, broken tree limbs, impassable roads due to debris, and scattered power outages.

Moderate flooding rain is also a significant concern, with additional rainfall amounts of 4-8 inches and locally higher amounts expected. Emergency plans should include the potential for moderate flooding, and residents in flood-vulnerable areas should consider protective actions. Rivers and tributaries may swell, and rapid inundation in low-lying areas is possible, making driving hazardous.

There is little to no storm surge inundation forecast for Wewahitchka, and tornadoes are not expected at this time. The watch is set to expire on October 7, 2026, at 10:15 PM UTC. For more information, visit NWS Tallahassee, Florida Division of Emergency Management, or Gulf County Emergency Management.
